A male model tricked his way into the finals of Miss Kazakhstan in scenes that would not have seemed out of place in the film Borat.

Ilay Dyagilev, 22, made the shortlist for women’s beauty pageant after putting on make-up and a wig.

He claimed his name was Arina Alieva and took photos of himself looking like an attractive brunette wearing lipstick and eye-shadow.

He beat more than 4,000 contestants to be named a finalist in the contest which is accepting internet entries for the first time this year.

Ilay eventually admitted he had made himself look like a woman to trick online voters into putting him through to the final 18.

Speaking after competition organisers had disqualified him, Illay said: "I am not urging people to cross-dress.

"What I want is to turn people's attention to the fact that the typical beauty standard is not that important, but individuality and natural look is."

This year the organisers of the beauty pageant have made it easier than ever for women to compete for the four million KZT (10,900 GBP) top prize.

As well as running traditional regional qualifying rounds, they also opened up the competition to online entries.

Women were able to enter by posting a photograph on Instagram using the hashtag "IWantToBecomeMissKazakhstan".

The Central Asian country was put on the map by Borat, a 2006 mockumentary comedy.

The film was written and produced by Sacha Baron Cohen who also played the title character, Borat Sagdiyev, a fictitious Kazakh journalist.
