Kako navodi Clarin, Maradona je pretrpio kardiorespiratorni zastoj u svojoj kući u kojoj se oporavljao nakon nedavne operacije na mozgu kojom mu je odstranjen krvni ugrušak. Brzo mu je pružena pomoć, no njegova tajnica za tisak potvrdila je smrt.
