Uz pomoć mini-robota opremljenih dvjema kamerama arheolozi su u srednjem Peruu otkrili brojne podzemne galerije, glinene posude i podzemne grobnice drevne civilizacije Chavin koja je svoj vrhunac u toj zemlji doživjela između 1300. i 550. godine prije Krista.
"Zasad su u trima podzemnim galerijama prvi put otkrivene ljudske grobnice iz razdoblja civilizacije Chavin", sa zadovoljstvom je objavilo peruansko ministarstvo kulture. "Riječ je o najznačajnijem arheološkom otkriću u regiji koja se povezuje s civilizacijom Chavin."

Najznačajnije regionalno otkriće u posljednjih 50 godina
Civilizacija je naziv dobila po važnome gradu Chavinu de Huantaru, a arheolozi ističu da je riječ o "najznačajnijem regionalnom otkriću u posljednjih 50 godina". Narod Chavina izgradio je veličanstvene hramove, bavio se izradom finih tkanina te njegovao vjersku umjetnost osebujnog stila. Chavini su prva peruanska civilizacija koja je izrađivala predmete i kipove od plemenitih metala, poput zlata i srebra te od kože.
Prvi su narod koji je ujedinio ravničarsko priobalno područje Perua s visokim planinskim Andama u zaleđu, čime su Chavini utrli put ostalim peruanskim civilizacijama, poput Inka. Nakon pada Chavina u području Anda razvile su se druge kulture, primjerice Chimu.

Istraženo samo oko 15 posto arheološkog nalazišta
U razdoblju prije carstva Inka (1400. - 1532.) u Peruu su uz narode Chavin i Chimu, obitavali i pripadnici naroda Caral i Wari. Chavin de Huantar je od 1985. godine na popisu svjetske UNESCO-ove kulturne baštine.
"Nova otkrića nas zasad vode kroz tri galerije u svijet drevne civilizacije Chavin", rekao je novinarima američki arheolog John W. Rick sa sveučilišta Stanford te dodao da čitav kompleks čini 35 galerija iz različitih razdoblja, a do nekih moderni čovjek stiže prvi put.
"Arheolozi će godinama raditi na istraživanju svijeta civilizacije Chavin o kojoj smo dosad znali tako malo. Tek smo zagrebali po površini", kazao je Rick, koji vodi istraživanja. Dosad je istraženo samo oko 15 posto arheološkog nalazišta Chavin de Huantar. Otkriće će proširiti saznanja o tradiciji i vjerskim obredima kulture Chavina.
